We will be practicing Monday, Wednesday and Saturday this year. Weekday practices will start at 6pm and end at 7:30. Weekend practices will start at 9am and end at 11:30.
Monday practices will start at Gus Fruh. 2642 Barton Hills Dr, Austin, TX 78704
Wednesday practices will be in Travis Country off Mission Oaks Blvd. 4901 Mission Oaks Blvd, Austin TX, 78735
Saturday practice will start at ATX Bikes off William Canon, the parking lot just west of the shop. Do not block any businesses if you're parking there. 5701 W. Slaughter Lane, Austin Texas
Reasoning for moving to Gus Fruh:
The Zilker practices and Zilker drivetimes got the worst ratings on the survey.
Riding a team of kids and coaches from Zilker and down the most populated portion of the Greenbelt was inviting conflict
Gus Fruh allows the team to start where the 'real' greenbelt trail begins and opens up more interesting trails deeper in the park.
Reasoning for maintaining Travis Country
Travis Country was the most popular (by survey) and well attended practice spot of the year. Feedback was exceedingly positive.
Reasoning for moving Saturday to SATN (South Austin Trail Network)
The South trails are more diverse than the greenbelt, offering athletes opportunity to scaffold more easily.
The South trails have many more options for 'bailouts' if a coach or athlete needs to return to the car
We will still ride destination trails and Greenbelt but our standard meeting place will migrate a few miles south for Saturday.
As a non-profit 501(c)3 entity, we are dedicated to our mission of building lifelong cyclists through Safety, Respect, Hard Work, and Fun.
As a volunteer organization, we rely on the help of the parents of our athletes. As such, we will expect that all families contribute of their time. We have many volunteer opportunities on race weekends, the most important of which is handling the meals for your athletes. Please review these opportunities and let our team director know how you'll be contributing this season to help make another incredible year.
Alright guys and gals - we're getting ready to roll!
Coaches – We’ve set up times in Google for you to ride with our more experienced coaches. Pick a coach (or a few), bring your questions, and use this time to learn how to better meet athletes where they are.
I want all coaches, but particularly POD leaders, to seriously consider attending CnD rides. Once you've ridden 3-4 times they will allow you on their listserv. The listserv is where you will get the GPX files we'll be riding most Saturdays.
The Texas Off-Road Race Series hosted by Trek (September 21 - November 16) is offering some pretty cool benefits for NICA athletes and coaches.
NICA coaches and student-athletes receive a 25% discount on race registration.
Student-athletes who participate in 3 or more TORS races, will have their registration fees donated back to their NICA team!
There are 2 races in the Austin area, one at Warda and one just past the Austin Airport in Dale at the Rally Ready race track. If you race one of the other races, your entry fees will come back to the Maroons!
Do note, however, that as with ALL races and race series we mention that are not specifically on the NICA calendar you can expect no support, no coaching, and un-sanitized courses. I.E. - these are likely to be more difficult and have dangerous features that are not usually seen on a NICA course. TORS is a non-NICA event and falls squarely within these caveats.
